DeviantArt & CGSociety

This is a reminder to all members that sources from DeviantArt and CGSociety have been forbidden for years. The reason is that it's a copyrighted work of other photoshop artists, and we had too many copyright disputes with them, and had to remove even the winning chops, stripping members of trophies and causing lots of upset to our members (who really should not have used these sources in the first place though).

The only exception to use the sources from these sites is if they are either explicitly tagged as "stock images", or if you have a direct permission from the author of the source you are using. In those two cases (in the creator's comments) you should state a credit to the author, and say whether you are using a "stock image" or have received a permission to use the image.

Though some of these sources have slipped though in the past, all future chops from CGSociety and DeviantArt will be removed (unless edited using alternative sources). We don't always have time to trace all sources till the voting starts so don't be upset if your chop is removed when there's no time to edit or resubmit. We have close to 50 submissions in some contests, and it's much faster/easier for you to check where your source is coming from (using either tineye.com or Google reverse image search) than for us doing it for all the chops (especially when the sources have already been blended into the chop).

So, to sum up, check where your source is coming from, even if you found it on the sites other than DeviantArt of SGsociety, because it could originate from there. Better yet, try using only photos unless a contest is dealing with movie posters or old paintings.

I've used Deviantart for years, but I've always only used "stock images", and have given credit to sources and linked back to their accounts many times. SOME stock sources don't even require that, as long as it isn't for commercial purposes. Do I need to get permission for each and every entry now?

Just don't use anything from deviantart that isn't a free to use stock image.

And no, you don't need to get permission for every entry, we just want members to check that the sources they use are "ok to use".

It's not just the copyright issue either. If people meld together other people's work it becomes hard to see where a choppers work starts and the source ends....and since these are photoshop "contests" that's sort of an important issue.

You have less problems when you just use straight photos that haven't already been manipulated in some way.

Yeah, it is a pain in the ass sorting out legit sources. Sometimes people clip stuff from Deviant and resize and repost on some other site that the crawlers pick up and kabam, you're in a fistfight LOL Some are legit mistakes, some not. I got screamed at by some chick from Deviant early on so know the game. I have been off line for a few years and come back to see all sorts of my stuff in all sorts of places. No complaints, artist have borrowed from each other since the dawn of time and the the prima donnas that bitch the loudest are the most insecure. I sort of pitty the artist that hangs on to a piece like it utterly defines them and any alteration is a direct blow to their esscence or something. I believe early on, I clung to my work like it was holy but mainly because it was so scarce. Now, thousands of works later... WTF S--t happens. I'll get over it LOL
But still... dont pilfer from those sites

Have seen work either duplicated or altered a bit on both Worth and FN. What is the situation there?

As per FN rules we don't allow recycling of chops that participated in any photoshop contest before (either at FN or any other site.)
We have no problem though if the chop that participated in a FN contest is later entered into some other photoshop contest on another site.
So, the only time you should flag an entry for recycling (click the [alert mods] link below the image), is if you saw the entry (or some version on it with minor alterations) previously at any other photoshop contest (FN or other site). Once the entry is flagged, it will be reviewed by the admins.

Hmmm dunno if I am of a different mind or not. As a thematic trend I recycle some elements I created. However the elements are secondary in focus on the new chop whereas they were primary focus in the original idea. This practice should be okay for everyone IMO. Jeff Dunham (ventriloquist) doesn't build a puppet to just use once and then throw out. So it is with chopping, sometimes themes in chops are successful and deserve repeating...within reason.

I am referring to chops that are identical.
