On this day fifty years ago the universe became more populated, as the cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin made the first space flight on April 12, 1961 at the height of the Cold War. The competition to be first into space was very close, as just twenty-three days later; the American Alan Shepard became the second man to launch into space. It's also the 30th anniversary of the first space shuttle flight today. The six people currently circling the Earth in the International Space Station said on Monday they would participate in the festivities from the most perfect vantage point of all — orbit.
As mankind marks the 50 years of space exploration, let's take this celebration a step further and imagine that manned space flight could be celebrating its 100th, 1000th, or even several thousandth anniversary by showing the evidence of manned space program in vintage photos, old paintings, cave paintings or even fossils.
