The situation with the Italian debt turned out so bad that Italian 10-year bond yields shot above the 7 percent level that is widely deemed unsustainable, reflecting investors' concerns that they may not get their money back and prompting German Chancellor Angela Merkel to issue a call to arms. Italian borrowing costs reached breaking point on Wednesday after Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi's insistence on elections instead of an interim government opened the way to prolonged instability and delays to economic reform. This comes a day after Berlusconi failed to get a majority in Italian parliament.

One of the icons of California - the famous Hollywood sign - is in trouble: unless enough public and private donations are raised ($12.5 mln), the company that owns the land around the Hollywood sign will sell the land for building houses, and the iconic sign will be demolished.
