Today is international Pi Day when math enthusiasts around the wold celebrate the famous constant Pi, equal to the ratio of the circumference of a circle to its diameter. Alaska Day is observed every year on October 18 in anniversary of the formal transfer of the Territory of Alaska from Russia to the United States which happened in Fort Sitka on October 18, 1867. Prior to this formal transfer, Alaska was sold by Russians for $7,200,000 on March 30, 1867. Alaska's name is based on the Eskimo word Alakshak meaning great lands or peninsula.

This date was selected so that there're exactly 12 days before Christmas, and there's no better time of year to promote violin must than the Christmas season. The most famous violin maker nowadays is Stefan-Peter Greiner who lives and works in Germany.

Penguin Day began many years ago when someone at NWC (Naval Weapons Center in Ridgecrest, California) became aware of the migration habits of the Antarctic penguin. On April 25th of every year, the formally-clad penguins of the Antarctic continent begin an incredible northward migration. Penguins are unique in that they are the only migratory birds that don't fly (they swim). They are also unique in that unlike, say, the Crested Egret, apparently penguins don't take migration all that seriously - they only swim about a hundred miles or so from the ice shelf and, after enjoying an extended "krill break", they all shrug (as only penguins can) and seem to lose interest in migrating.
