Today, US military officials officially lifted the ban on women soldiers serving in combat. The ban lasted almost 20 years and was initially signed in 1994. Defense Secretary Leon Panetta said that lifting the ban was necessary "to give women an equal chance to serve our country"... women are in many ways "better, more diligent in combat than men". Women make up about 14% of 1.4 million active US army members.
