March 8 is the International Women's Day (IWD), widely celebrated in Eastern Europe and post-Soviet countries like Russia, where it is an official holiday. Surprisingly, the first IWD was observed in 1909 in the United States when women marched through New York City demanding shorter hours, better pay and voting rights.
