| | Firefighters are getting help, a high-tech ally -- a remote controlled spy plane that works in smoke, can see in the dark and never falls asleep. Scientists have been in the process of testing such planes for some time. They are similar to the drone aircraft that are in flight over Iraq and Afghanistan. They can help track the direction and behavior of fast moving flames without putting human beings at risk. After experimental flights of three unmanned crafts this summer, the U.S. Forest Service will launch its first true life deployment in the spring. The plan will call for the craft traversing a dozen Western states, mapping out real forest files 24 hours a day.
