 U.S. President George W. Bush vowed on Tuesday to veto any legislation that Congress might send to him designed to block a state owned Arab company from managing the operations at six large U.S. seaports. The President's statement and position has set up a major confrontation between the White House and the Republicans in Congress. Top Congressional Republicans have requested that the port deal be closely reviewed because of national security considerations and concerns. Under the terms of the proposed transaction, Dubai Ports World, a business that is owned by the United Arab Emirates, would operate ports in New York, Newark, Philadelphia, Baltimore, Miami and New Orleans. The sale was expected to be finalized in March 2006 (before the objections being raised by members of Congress and others). Officials from the Department of Homeland Security reviewed and approved the deal. |
