| Timothy Franz Geithner (born August 18, 1961, Brooklyn, New York, USA) is an American economist and financier and the 75th US Secretary of the Treasury since January 26, 2009. Timothy Geithner is the 9th President of the Federal Reserve Bank of New York (2003—2009).
Geithner Biography:
Timothy was born in Brooklyn. His father, Peter F. Geithner, was director of the Asia program at the Fond Foundation New York and his mother, Deborah Moore Geithner, is a pianist and piano teacher in Larchmont. The father of Deborah Moore Geithner, Charles F.Moore was adviser to President Dwight Eisenhower and worked as Vice-President of the “Ford Motor Company”.
Timothy Geithner spent the major part of his childhood outside the USA – in Zimbabwe, India and Thailand. He completed schooling at the International School in Bangkok. Timothy received higher education in the USA gaining a bachelor’s degree in government and Asian Studies at Dartmouth College (graduated in 1983). Timothy also holds a master's degree in International economics and did East Asian Studies at Johns Hopkins University’s School of Advanced International Studies (completed in 1985). Timothy speaks both the Chinese and Japanese language. He lived in both China and Japan.
In 1985, Timothy married classmate Carole M. Sonnenfeld. The couple has two children: Elise and Benjamin.
Professional career:
After completing his M.A, Timothy worked for three years in Henry Kissinger’s Company “Kissinger and Associates” in Washington and joined the International Affairs Division of the US Treasury Department in 1988 (Ministry of Finance).
From 1995 – 1996 he was deputy assistant secretary for monetary and financial policy; from 1996 -1997 he was senior deputy assistant secretary for international affairs; from 1997-1998 –Timothy was the assistant secretary for international affairs. Further, Timothy was under secretary of the treasury of international affairs (1998—2001) under Treasury Secretaries Robert Rubin and Lawrence Summers.
From 2001 to 2003 Timothy was the director of policy in the Development and Review Department in the International Monetary Fund.
Since 2002, Timothy served as a Senior Fellow in the International Economics Department in the Council on Foreign Relations.
Service in the Federal Reserve System:
In October 2003, Timothy was nominated to the post of President of the Federal Reserve Bank of New York, which also promoted his nomination to Vice Chairman of the Federal Open Market Committee of the Federal Reserve System of the USA. In 2006, he also became a member of the “Group of Thirty”.
In March, 2008, Timothy Geithner organized the rescue and sale of the investment bank “Bear Stearns”.
US Secretary of Treasury:
President-elect Barack Obama nominated the candidature of Timothy Geithner to the post of Secretary of the Treasury on the 24th November 2008. However, in the course of hearings in Senate, it was revealed that Timothy had evaded taxes for the years of 2001 – 2004. As a result, his nomination to the post of Secretary of Treasury was confirmed by the US Senate only on January 26, 2009 (60 votes to 34). The same day, US Vice President Joseph Biden made Timothy Geithner take the sworn-in oath.
