| | England is waiting for the expected announcement of Tony Blair this
week. The British prime minister will address the Labour
Party members and will make a formal statement of
departure from his post as the party leader. This will also start the
50 day countdown to his resignation of prime minister post which he
held for ten years since he took the office in 1997. Back then Labour
Party took the parliament majority and took the office from the
Concentrative Party which was seen as stagnating force by most British
voters. However since the years went by, polls in England show that
approval ratings for Tony Blair and the Labour Party are at their
lowest in ten years. The reason for such public disappointment is mainly the years of British
engagement in Iraq war which had cost lives, and brought big increase in
military budget spending. Most English citizens these days consider
that their country should have pulled out from Iraq long time ago, whether
or not they supported the initial active role in Iraq war. On a
positive side, Blair cabinet will be remembered for the good internal and
external economy steps that helped increase the country's GDP, and
strengthen the British currency. Much debated proposal of joining the
monetary union with other European countries, and replacing Pound with
Euro, was finally declined. Seven years after, this monetary separation allowed British
currency to grow strong against Euro and American dollar. Tony Blair
will make his announcement while the Queen of England is still in the
USA. He plans to come back to law practicing and take an active role
as a goodwill Ambassador in Africa, after stepping down in July. |
