Contest Directions:
In case you are among the many US citizens who file their tax returns just before the deadline, you still have a few days left. The due date for the 2010 individual federal income tax returns will be Monday, April 18, 2011.
Typically, Tax Day falls on April 15 unless that day happens to be on a Saturday, Sunday or federal holiday. In 2011, April 15 fulfills none of these requirements as it falls on a Friday, and there's no federal holiday on that day.
So how did this come about? In 2011, Washington, D.C., will celebrate Emancipation Day on April 15, a day earlier than normal, since April 16 falls on a Saturday. Emancipation Day signifies the anniversary of the day that President Lincoln signed the Compensated Emancipation Act. The Act, which was "for the release of certain persons held to service or labor in the District of Columbia," freed 3,100 slaves in the District, making DC residents the "first freed" by the US government. In 2005, Emancipation Day was made an official public holiday in the District of Columbia.
Tax Day will be moved forward one business day, in observance of the Washington DC holiday, putting it on Monday, April 18 this year.
Let us imagine what would happen if taxes were not taken in money, but instead were taken in fractions of taxed property. In this case IRS would simply cut off and take away part of your house, part of your car, part of your computer, etc. In this contest you are to photoshop any taxed objects with parts cut off and taken away from them. Some examples are: half a house, half a car, two-thirds of a dog, half a painting, etc.
