| | The New York City Police Department, the largest police force in the United States, wants to install hundreds of surveillance cameras in busy parts of the city. These are areas in which there have been increases in robberies and burglaries in recent months. The police already are watching live video feeds from surveillance cameras in housing projects located throughout the five boroughs of the city. The new cameras would not be monitored like the ones currently in use in the housing projects. Rather, high quality digital recordings would be reviewed later in the event of a crime in a specific location. The police also contend that the cameras will serve as a deterrent to crime in these areas.
