This contest is fueled by the following news: "Superman Returns" is off to a super start. The flick brought in an estimated $21 million with its debut in the United States, according to Warner Brothers, the movie's distributor. Dan Fellman, distribution chief of Warner Brothers domestic distribution company, remarked that the movie was ... flying. Fellman indicated that the company has a great deal riding on the success of the this latest addition to the Superman franchize. The studio spent more than $200 million to make the movie and millions more in promotions. The last Superman movie, released in 1987, was a box office flob. The movie comes in as number eleven on the list of all time big Wednesday night openers. The movies comes in just below "The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring," according to Paul Dergarabedian, the president of Exhibitor Relations, a company that tracks this type of data. "Superman Returns" opens just below "War of the Worlds," which opened last year over the U.S. Independence Day holiday week.
