| | Steve Jobs married Laurene Powell on March 18, 1991. The wedding ceremony was presided by Kobun Chino Otogawa, a Zen Buddhist monk . The couple has a son and two daughters. Steve Jobs also has a daughter, Lisa Brennan-Jobs (born in 1978) from a relationship with artist Chrisann Brennan. Initially he denied the paternity but later on admitted it.
In an unauthorized biography "The Second Coming of Steve Jobs" author Alan Deutschman asserts that Jobs once had a romantic relationship with Joan Baez. Deutschman quotes Elizabeth Holmes - Jobs's girlfriend in Reed College - said that she "considers that Steve became lover of Joan Baez in significant measure because Baez was a lover of Bob Dylan". In another unauthorized biography - "iCon. Steve Jobs" by Jeffrey Young and William Simon – the authors assumed that Jobs would have married Baez, but her age at that point of time (41) hinted that the couple could hardly think of having children.
Jobs is an admirer of The Beatles. Several times he referred to them in his speeches and also gave an interview on a concert show by Paul McCartney. When he was asked about the business model in 60 Minutes, he answered:
My business model - The Beatles: Four guys, who controlled the negative tendencies of each other; they complemented each other. And the total result was more significant than the result of each of them individually. Important things in business are not made by one person - they are made by a team.
In 1982, Jobs bought an apartment in The San Remo – a building in NewYork with a politically progressive reputation. Demi Moore, Stephen Spielberg and Steve Martin also owned apartments in the same building. Taking the services of I.M.Pei, Jobs repaired his apartment for several years in the two upper of northern towers of the building, only to sell it to soloist U2's Bono after almost two decades. Jobs never moved into that apartment.
In 1984, Jobs purchased a private residence in the Spanish colonial style with an area of 1600 sq.m with 14 bedrooms and designed by George Washington Smith in Woodside (California) and was also known as Jackling House. Though, as it was informed, the house remained without furniture and Jobs lived in it for close to ten years. According to the available information, he had an old BMW motorcycle in the sitting room and allowed Bill Clinton to use the bike in 1998. Since the early 1990s, Jobs lived in the house in Old Palo- Alto in the neighborhood of Palo - Alto. President Clinton had dinner in it with Jobs and 14 CEOs of Silicon Valley on August 7, 1996. In turn, Steve Jobs, who was a sponsor of the democrats, had the opportunity to sleep in Lincoln's bedroom in the White House.
Jobs allowed the Jackling House to fall into a state of disrepair, planning to demolish it and construct a smaller house; however, local preservationists defied his plans. In June, 2004, the city council of Woodside gave consent to Steve Jobs to demolish the house on condition, that Jobs would advertise the property for one year so that the interested persons had a possibility to move it to other place and restore it. Many people showed interest but not a single agreement was reached in this regard. Later in the same year, a group of local preservationists started identifying legal measures to stop the demolition. In January 2007, Jobs was deprived of the rights to demolish the house according to court's judgement. The judgement of the court was deferred on appeal in March 2010, and the private mansion was demolished in the beginning of February, 2011.

Jobs had a public skirmish with Michael Dell, CEO of Dell Computers, which began when Jobs criticized Dell for manufacturing "uninnovative beige boxes". On October 6, 1997, when asked on the Gartner symposium, what would he do if he owned the then problematic company Apple Computers, he replied: "I would close it and return the money to shareholders". In 2006, Steve Jobs sent an email to all the employees, when the market capitalization of Apple exceeded Dell. In the email, he wrote:
“Team, as was clarified, that Michael Dell is not perfect in predicting the future. According to today's results at the closing stages of stock market, Apple is worth more than Dell. Shares can go up and down, things may change tomorrow, but this is a moment of reflection for today. Steve.” |
