This contest is fueled by the following news: Sleeping at your working place can actually increase your productivity: If you fell asleep at your working place and your boss saw you, do not be shy. Just explain that you are enhancing your intellectual skill and increasing your productivity. And do not forget to say that you have powerful evidence to support your point of view. And the evidence have been presented by scientists, who have discovered that a short sleep during the day can help to increase your memory and facilitate memorizing important facts. A study has been conducted in the USA, where a short afternoon siesta during working hours has become a common c for many corporations. However, not every boss is happy with the perspective of his staff members sleeping at work. Doctor Matthew Tucker, who headed the team of researchers has admitted that this idea often meets a lot of resistance. ‘Time given to a short nap, is considered counterproductive in the atmosphere which requires high concentration of intelligence and considerable memory involvement' – he said. Him and his colleagues from the laboratory of the University Of New York have decided to prove that this concept is wrong. They have considered the influence short sleep on the process of fact memorizing. The research was conducted on students. During the experiment the volunteers were asked to learn word pairs, for example "watches – hands". The ability of students to memorize actions was also checked – they were asked to reproduce exactly the mirror image of a complicated scheme. Then half of the group was locked in a soundproof room. Although they were allowed to sleep for an hour, on average the sleep took 47 minutes. While they were dozing, the other group was relaxing, reading magazines, watching movies. Six hours into the experiment both groups of volunteers continued to be tested. Although both groups shows good results in the experiment with mirror images, those who had a nap showed better results in memory tests compared to the students who stayed awake during the day. Those who had a nap remembered up to 15% more word pairs. Scientists suggest that the first sleep phase (NREM) the period without dreams, takes about an hour and a half from the moment of falling asleep and can play an important role in the process of memorizing facts. During this time conditions required for ‘compiling' of facts in such a way that they can be then easily extracted can be observed. However, if you sleep longer than that and move to the next sleeping phase (REM) which is accompanied by dreams the effect of the previous phase can be reduced to zero. Nevertheless, scientists warn that although a short siesta can help remember facts during the day, it is still not clear, how continuous this effect can me to suit the long term memory. Among famous siesta fans – Sir Winston Churchill, who had a regular afternoon nap followed by bath. He never changed this ritual even during the Second World War. British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher had a 20 minute nap to prepare herself to the weekly meeting with parliamentarians. For many people sleep is a necessary activity among other activities performed during the day. They see it as a waste of time that takes hours which can be spent on performing more important tasks. These misconceptions lead to fatigue and inability to think clearly. In fact, sleep is the most important aspect of your life. The better you sleep the better your results during the day will be. Sleep – is not time ‘wasted' from the active life. It is a process during which your body gains strength preparing you for the next day. Good sleep gives you strength, you feel fit, and think clearly. It allows you to concentrate on work during the whole day. The best way to do everything you have planned is to give your body some good rest during sleep. Depression can often affect the character of sleep. Even late at night you have difficulties falling asleep, turning from one side to the other. Or you can lie in bed for a long time without any wish to get up. The less you sleep the less you care about your own wishes, you stop eating and doing usual day-to-day activities. You can start abusing alcohol or drugs. Moreover, you risk losing your interest to normal active and productive life. Men usually try to hide their depression from other people. But one day these feeling will break through at the least convenient moment, besides they often have a very negative character. Men with depression can often show violence towards themselves. According to statistics, men commit suicide 4 times more often than women. Men refuse to ask for help. They are concerned about other people thinking that there is something wrong with them. They have to understand, that these emotions are absolutely normal and that they should take care of their health. If you want to get rid of your depression try talking to your wife, friend, a doctor or a psychologist first. They will help you understand whether you need any outside help. But do not try to fight with it on your own.
