 A little behind schedule, the space shuttle Discovery has taken to the sky, lifting off at 2:38 on July 4th. The spaceship reached a safe orbit. The successful launch marked the start of what will be a twelve day mission. This flight is the first in a year in a scaled back shuttle fleet. NASA says they try return to more frequent shuttle flights. A couple of minutes after the lift off, an onboard camera traced bits of foam falling from the shuttle's external tank. The foam did not strike the shuttle, however. Discovery launched in beautiful weather in Florida as the United States celebrated Independence Day. The flames from the booster rocket were easily seen by spectators. Not long after take off, the external tank detached and fell into the Atlantic Ocean. The orbiter moved on towards the International Space Station, where it will dock. |
