| From time immemorial, simple designs under the name “Scarecrow” or “Frightening” are made and installed in gardens and farms to scare away the birds.
The scarecrow in the form of a human figure simulates a constant presence of a person in the fields and in the garden, near seedbeds and trees with a desired delicacy for birds.
Probably, the first scarecrow is from many years ago, when a person started gardening - truck farming and tries to rescue the crops, with difficulty, from feathery thieves.
Very few things are required to make a scarecrow: short and long poles, connected in the form of a cross; clothes for the scarecrow - an old shirt and trousers; sackcloth bag for the head; straw for stuffing the clothes and the bag; an old straw hat and your imagination. It is possible to stitch button “eyes” on the bag, a red cloth “mouth” with white buttons for “teeth”. The straw hat is fastened to the “head” using a wire and it is possible to hang tin tapes from beer cans on wires along the circumference of the hat. Involve the children in making scarecrows and they will remember this joyful combined creation forever. Whether the scarecrow (if you wish, give another name to the scarecrow) will be able to frighten away birds from the garden or not – only time will show, but a good mood shall be ensured for you, for your children and even the neighbors.
From ancient periods, gardeners and truck farmers dressed the scarecrow in their old clothes, which were not used any more. Can the poor frightener, still work when fairly worn, faded due to the hot sun and frayed by rains and winds?
The scarecrow is a colorful image which entered into proverbs and sayings not only as a symbol of bird frightener but also as a symbol of estrangement and absurd human strangeness.
In the fairy tale “The Wizard of OZ”, the silly but very charming and kind scarecrow with sawdust in its head dreamt of finding intellect.
