| The road roller is a vehicle machine meant for tamping and strengthening the ground, asphalt etc.
Design
The main part of the road roller is a roller, a cylinder located in place of a wheel or wheels. The roller with its mass presses the tamping material. Each road roller has a driving roller, to which torsion torque is transmitted from the engine, and driven which serves as the guiding mechanism.
Types of road rollers
Rollers may be smooth, cam, and grid or pneumatic wheeled.
Smooth rollers are simply metallic cylinders which press with their mass. Generally these rollers are used for asphalt jobs, because finally they give a uniform platform.
Cam wheels are covered with cams-small projections. These rollers are effective for working with loose soil.
The surface of grid wheels is covered with a grid. These rollers are used for tamping different soil types. On passing through non-uniform ground, big lumps break into pieces and as a result of which strengthening increases.
The pneumatic wheel roller consists of a set of wheels separated with intermediate elements. If the road roller has more than one pneumatic wheel roller, then they are set so that the tracks of the rear wheels are passed between the tracks of the front wheels.
More than one type of roller may be used in road rollers. Such road rollers are called combined (generally front roller – smooth, and rear – pneumatic).
As per the number of rollers, road rollers are divided into single, double and triple rollers.
Rollers may be located one after another, or for three rollers, road roller two narrowed rollers may be located on a single axis.
Single roller road rollers are generally a toes type; it means they are fixed to the tractor or another prime mover.
Road rollers for better tamping may be executed in the vibration variant, in which one of the rollers gets vibrated in a vertical direction and as a result the tamping depth increases.
For the ground, the tamping depth may vary depending on different designs from 20-30cm to 150-160cm.
As per mass, road rollers are classified from less than 1 ton to heavy that are above 16 tons.
The speed of road rollers may reach 5 km/hour, but for many road rollers the maximum speed is 2 to 3 km/hour.
