Design
Main part of road roller is a roller – cylinder located in place of wheel or wheels. Roller with its mass presses the tamping material. Each road roller has driving roller, to which torsion torque is transmitted from the engine, and driven roller – which serves as guiding mechanism.
Types of road rollers
Rollers may be smooth, cam, grid, pneumatic wheeled.
Smooth rollers are simply metallic cylinders which press with their mass. Generally these rollers are used for asphalt jobs, because finally they give uniform platform.
Cam wheels are covered with cams-small projections. These rollers are effective for working with loose soil.
Surface of grid wheels is covered with grid. These rollers are used for tamping the different soil types. On passing through non-uniform ground, big lumps break in to pieces in the result of which strengthening increases.
Pneumatic wheel roller consists of set of wheels separated with intermediate elements. If road roller has more than 1 pneumatic wheel roller, then they are set so that tracks of rear wheels are passed between the tracks of front wheels.
More than one type of rollers are also may be used in road rollers. Such road rollers are called combined (generally front roller – smooth, and rear – pneumatic).
As per the number of rollers, road rollers are divided in to single, double and triple roller.
Rollers may be located one after another, or for three roller road roller two narrowed rollers may be located on single axis.
Single roller road rollers are generally toes types, it means they are fixed to the tractor or other prime mover.
Road rollers for better tamping may be executed in vibration variant, in which one of the rollers gets vibrated in vertical direction and as a result, tamping depth increases.
For ground, tamping depth may vary depending on different designs from 20-30 cm to 150-160 cm.
As per mass, road rollers are classified from manual less than 1 ton to heavy – above 16 tons.
Speed of road rollers may reach 5 km / hour, but for many road rollers maximum speed is – 2 to 3 km / hour.
