| For those determined to leave their jobs, CNN published an article with the "DOs" and "DON'Ts" of resigning. CNN states that most quitters "do it wrong" and receive less than satisfactory references and leave a bitter feeling with an ex-employer.
According to a clause of the labor code, the employee has the right to terminate the labor contract after informing the employer about the termination in a written form weeks in advance. Before the end of a specified period, the employee has the right to withdraw the application at any time. Even after the expiry of the deadline about the termination of the contract, if the contract is not terminated and the employee does not insist on quitting, then the labor contract continues to be effective.
It is not so easy for even a steady employee to enter the boss’ cabin with a resignation letter. However, rumors about you quitting the job, which spread across the office at lighting speed, are much more terrible.
Therefore, sharing the idea of resignation with colleagues could be trouble-some. You might a) be under threat, that this information might reach the boss earlier than your official information (the reaction can be most unpredictable) and b) isolated amongst “yesterday's girlfriends”.
After deciding to quit the company, it is necessary to be extremely cautious and initially decide: who will be the informant to your management – you or the disturbed public. Former colleagues, as a rule, feel abandoned (with an exception that, if you were a “thorn” for the entire team). Some interpret the resignation decision of a colleague (especially, if he holds a supervising post) as an escape signal: aha, something’s not fine in the company.
The corporate culture of the organization could help in taking a correct decision: if the company has the custom to be informed in advance about quitting and the former employees did so, then it is a unique chance to maintain a good reputation and work the last few days in favorable conditions.
Even a simple observation can be helpful: how the boss reacts to the resignation. The boss is the translator of the corporate spirit. His offense will be automatically transferred to the entire work team.
Sometimes, the sensation around quitting is contrived with the purpose of an increase in status and a hike in the pay package. The problem of such career growth is that this trick can be done only once. Experienced bosses distinguish manipulation from a real threat. If the boss has the intentions to give the increment, then the probabilities are more that they start convincing you to stay back. However, even a risk is hidden here: agreeing to new management conditions and staying back, you are at risk of not justifying the assigned hopes.
You are not persuaded. The decision to appeal will not be entertained. You quit ... Indirect looks and whispers behind your back will not cause discomfort. However, high spirits in the anticipation of a new scope can be unexpectedly saddened.
According to legislation, you can withdraw the job quitting application at any time. But, how democratic and loyal could be the organization, the probability is high that people shall look askew upon the “returnee”. Being “self-sufficient”, it will not be a cakewalk for the employee to gain the lost authority and “self” reputation. Though, cases are available, when employees that have already quit are persuaded to return back and their colleagues and boss wait with open arms.
Usually, no boss will be in delight after learning about the loss of a good specialist. Not a single collective will be delighted to know about the loss of a reliable colleague, the professional, the soul of the company. However, it is necessary to leave with dignity, by keeping in mind that it is possible to lose face even on the last day.
