| | The all-terrain vehicle (ATV) or quad is a small vehicle similar to motorcycle but having more than two wheels. According to ANSI the quad must have the following features:
Tires, designed for low pressure;
The driver sits atop on the seat;
A cycle type handle;
And must be a one or two seater;
Most of the ATVs have four wheels; such ATVs are called quads or four-wheeled ATVs. Some of the ATVs have three wheels (three-wheelers or tricycles). Also, there are ATVs with 6 or 8 wheels.
Conventionally, all the ATVs can be divided into two types – utility and sports. Utility ATVs are meant for entertainment rides and for domestic usage, the latter quads are used for sports purpose.
Two stroke as well as four-stroke engines are used in ATVs. Utility quads are basically equipped with continuous variable transmission (CVT) with reverse motion, which sometimes have a lowered transmission. Sports quads are mostly equipped with a mechanical transmission. Among utility ATVs there are all-wheel drive models also, with attachable front axle. The drive is mainly executed by the chain on the rear axle, and in the case of full drive by cardan transmission.
