 3.8 million pickup trucks and SUVs were recalled Wednesday by Ford Motor Company. The cruise control system switch in these vehicles was suspected of causing engine fires. The recall is the fifth largest auto industry recall in U.S. history. Ford reports that the recall of the 1994 through 2004 vehicles includes the top selling Ford F-150 pickup truck, the Expedition, the Lincoln Navigator, and the Bronco. Ford indicated that it would start sending out recall notices to owners of these vehicles in the United States immediately. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration and Ford (the number two U.S. based auto maker) have been investigating complaints of engine fires linked to the switch in question. Toyota Motor Company has recalled 978,000 sport utility vehicles and pickup trucks after concerns were raised over the power steering system. The vehicles included in the Toyota recall are the 1990 through 1995 4Runner SUV, 1989 through 1995 4WD truck and the 1993 through 1998 T-100 pickup truck. Toyota reported that a rod linking the steering wheel and the wheels actually may fracture under conditions where the steering wheel is turned while the vehicle is not moving. Owners will be notified of the recall beginning in mid-September, according to Toyota. |
