* In architecture: Portal – an ornamental entrance into a church or significant building, mainly, gothic and roman architecture. The number of portals corresponds to the number of naves and sometimes portals are found at the ends of transepts. The portal represents the large portion gradually narrowing inside the niche in the wall. In Gothic architecture, portals were decorated abundantly with statues.
* In medicine: the name of the antidepressant (reactant – Fluoxetine).
* In engineering: A P-shaped metallic load-bearing structure, consisting of 2 lateral or paired interconnected supports (legs) and an upper beam or frame; The portal is a part of certain technology, for example, a portal hoisting crane, portal machine and others. A portal is used while fitting working parts of machine and other units at certain heights. Portals can be stationary as well as portable along guides or on rails.
* Internet: A large site uniting various universal services
It is accepted to call universal portals which encompass multiple subjects such as Yahoo or Yandex which appear around the search engine. Specialized thematic portals are called vertical portals. It is also accepted to categorize portals into international and regional (Yahoo belongs to the first type; Yandex, concentrated mainly on Runet, belongs to the second category). In addition, portals are subdivided into public and corporate.
Public portals focus on all Web-users. They are the Internet equivalent to public libraries; anyone can login and use all the menus which are displayed on the screen (Yahoo!, MSN, etc.).
Corporate portals often are contrary to the public portals. Corporate portal focuses mainly on a specific type of user (employees, partners). Though such portals quite often have an external interface for public use, it differs in the possibilities available in the internal interface.
Other methods also exists in determining horizontal and vertical portals. A horizontal portal is a portal which is independent of the corporate informative system of the enterprise. Such portals should have their own database of users, authorization, etc.
A vertical portal is a website which is integrated into a corporate informative system about the company. Integration can be carried out at a login level onto the portal (for example, it can use LDAP or a Kerberos server) or at much lower levels, for example, integration of an Internet shop with the accounts system of the company.
* In artworks, films and computer games: the magic (technological) construction with the help of which takes place instantaneous displacement of objects in space, sometimes in time;

Portal (porta - gate) is the main entrance of a large architectural construction, usually having a large-scale architectural frame with rich ornamentation. This term is also applied to designate the “P” shaped frame of a fireplace.

The term is used predominantly with respect to Gothic and Roman architecture where the number of portals usually corresponds to the number of naves, sometimes portals also exist at the transept ends.
Usually a Gothic portal represents itself as a gradually narrowing niche in wall. It is often decorated with statues.
