The have come together to elect a new Pope who will take the thrown occupied by John Paul II for a generation. The new Pontiff will preside over the world's 1.1 billion Roman Catholics. The Cardinals hail from 52 countries. The Cardinals gathered for a mid-morning Mass at St. Peter's Basilica and then headed to the Sistine Chapel where they will remain sequestered until a new Pope is elected. Once in the Chapel, the Cardinals will take a vow of secrecy and hear a meditation from a senior Cardinal. They may begin voting the same day.
