| The polar bear cub named Knut from the German Berlin zoo has been a favorite
in the news lately. The cub was born in December 2006 and just like his brother was rejected by his mother and was left to die. The brother cub
did not survive, but the zoo officials have managed to save Knut and
decided to raise it themselves. The polar bear accepted food and
seemed very comfortable being raised by humans. In three months
since it was born the cub has grown to be a healthy cute polar bear,
and has literally become a German celebrity. It has been featured on
TV and magazines, and even made it into US news media. However there's
a lot of controversy about Knut too. Many animal activists say that
the cub is better left to die than being raised by humans. The argue
that the human intervention will affect bears independence and will
only hurt the cub in the long run. Furthermore they say that in nature
this cub rejected by his mother would be left to meet his fate and not
survive, and thus zoo officials intervene with animal rights, the
critics say. However those who like to see Knut live and grow much
outnumber the critics. Many kids and families visit Berlin zoo just to
see the Kunt, who seems to enjoy the attention too. |
