Eaten raw as well as canned fruit; jams and candies are made with pineapple. Largely in Philippines and Taiwan, Ananas sativus is cultivated also for obtaining textile material.

Habitat of pineapple is semiarid northeast of South America, Brazil, Guiana and Paraguay. Nowadays pineapple is grown in many tropical countries, in Holland, growers have learned to cultivate in hothouses.
Pineapple is a draught resistant plant. Its linear leaves are wrapped in a rosette form; length is of 90 cm, coarse and as a rule, leaves are covered at edges with spines. Stem on a pulpy peduncle, is simple, and contains of thick, spirally arranged florets on pivot. Florets are edible. Stem of pineapple in its structure is similar to stem of raspberry. It consists of separate rich fruits on central scape which penetrate the stem from bottom to the top where a lock of leaves are placed. Fruit coloring depends upon the variety varies from yellow, gold, red or even violet.
Pineapple fruit is dainty and healthy. Because pineapple juice contains ferments similar to that of tripsin, which helps in digestion, possess high diet values. Only ripen pineapple is to be eaten, because unripe fruits burn lips and is a strong purgative. |
