This contest is fueled by the following news: According to "New Scientist" magazine, a flock of pigeons has been outfitted with mobile phone backpacks to monitor air pollution in San Jose, California. The birds are slated to be released in August, with each bird carrying a GPS satellite tracking receiver, air pollution sensors and a basic mobile phone. Text messages regarding air quality will be beamed to scientists in real time and to a special pigeon blog, a journal that will be available generally on the Internet. In addition, minature cameras fastened around the pigeons' necks will also take and post aerial photographs.
