The game series is about Phoenix Wright, who persistently comes out of his genre boundaries. Here, the trivial definition of "quest" is not enough. The search for clues and solving the puzzle hardly takes half of the play process. Even the puzzles, in fact, are in the form of dialogues. To split one character, beg information from another ... Slowly, all the clues, related to a crime, will be evident.
What can be done with the obtained findings? Evidently, use them for the sake of law. The main "combat" action gets unfolded in the sanctuary of justice. The player is the lawyer, and defends his ward till the last drop of blood. The enemy is the prosecutor, capable of clinging on to any minute changes in the testimony of the witnesses. Hence, every consequence appears to be a real spectacle. More specifically, it is an intellectual duel between legal teams, who are piously confident in their righteousness.
Such confidence is just to their benefit. The benefit of the crime is thus selected to be more beautiful than the other. Being charged with murder – the most common scenario in the beginning of Ace Attorney. And all clues indicate to the guilt of the defendant. The normal situation: revenge killing. A corpse was found in the suspect's car. A witness is always there and the film depicts the meeting of the victim and ward. And he recently escaped from the prison. Will somebody defend such a man? What would be his fate?
Still, the basic idea of the show is the belief in the client. It is she, who sets the tone, makes the player, in spite of everything, prove the defendant's innocence. Authors get out with dignity. Each case will turn upside down three times, before it shows the truth. Such a powerful plot, however, restricts freedom. The player in Ace Attorney just sends the history: presents a valid argument, starts a conversation on the required topic. One lot of evidence leads to a whole heap of turns in the plot. At the same time, the player does not get away from the role of passive observer. Turning a hopeless case into a "happy end" is still the task.
For this, it is necessary not only to see through the crime but also to gather solid evidence. The investigation phase precedes most of the court arguments. It involves information gathering and examination of witnesses. With the help of a menu on the bottom of the screen, it is possible to travel to locations and study them. Valuable findings are sent to court records. Useless ones - are subjected to scathing commentary from Phoenix. Another important source of information - people, associated with crime. Dialogues are linear throughout - and thus, saturated and full of information.
It is not possible to talk closely with each and every witness. Some of them persist in hiding their secrets. Others simply lie, trying to hide the truth. It is easy to distinguish such lies. In the second part - Justice for All – the episode suddenly finds mystical content. Now, Phoenix has Magatama – a gift from his girlfriend. A special amulet works as a reliable lie detector. With the help of the special amulet, the hero is able to see "psychological" locks, which are not noticeable by the naked eye. Particularly, they are responsible for concealing information. The deeper the truth is hidden, the more locks there are to protect it. The key to them is correctly matching clues. Prove that the villain is lying - and the truth will come out on its own.
There is no escape in skipping the required information. Ace Attorney is uncompromisingly linear. She will not let a player overlook important pieces of clues. Because of this, sometimes unforeseen deadlocks arise. Was the photograph of the deceased shown to the witness? Was the guard office inattentively ransacked? Welcome to the plot dungeons. While the right trigger is still not activated, one cannot see the exit. Fortunately, the logic of script writers is quite transparent. And for the slow-witted players, there is always help with a set of hints. Even in his arguments, Phoenix never hints on the correct course of the investigation.
Having dealt with the work of the sleuth, it is possible to look over their present role. The role of an advocate. Particularly, the main headache begins at this very stage. Testimony clearly points to the guilt of the ward. The prosecutor draws out one after the other significant trump cards from his sleeve. And the judge makes hasty conclusions and is constantly twisted to the deception of charges. Under these conditions, Phoenix has to work out what's going on and angrily shouting "I protest!" and pointing out the loopholes in the testimony of witnesses by providing evidence, proving the crookedness of what was said. And afterward, include own deduction to the maximum. Its good that, everything is disclosed during the actual trial.
