More than a half century after Korean peninsula was divided into two parts, North are South Korea finally agreed to set their differences apart and unite into one strong Korea. Such decision signed by North Korean leader Kim Jong Il and South Korean President Roh Moo-hyun was backed up by the United Nations General Assembly. This comes exactly one month after the International Day of Non-Violence, which is a new holiday. In June this year, United Nations General Assembly voted to establish October 2 as the International Day of Non-Violence. The date for this holiday was chosen on purpose - October 2 is the birthday of Mahatma Gandhi, an Indian leader who spent his life fighting for civil rights, peace and non-violance.

The first world peace congress was held in 1949 year in Paris and Prague. The emblem for this congress was drawn by Pablo Picasso. On the emblem a white dove was pictured, carrying an olive branch with its beak.
There exists a tradition of releasing white doves.
