Latest marketing trick in advertising on cars is to do a paint-job which extends a picture of a driver. Such gimmick quickly grabs the viewer's attention which then slides to an advertising message next to the paint-job.
Take any object / person and partially cover it with another object with a picture that continues the partially covers object - this way that the whole composition makes an illusion that the two objects are part of the whole. Think of paintings, magazines, buildings with paint-jobs covering anything extending its picture and making an illusion. Here's an
example 1 , example 2, and example 3.
This contest is a generalization of our popular celebrity money contest where celebrities needed to be partially covered with banknotes.

This contest is fueled by the following news:
Optical illusion is an error in visual sight: improper estimation of stretch lengths, dimensions of angles and color of drawn object. Causes of those errors lie in peculiarities of physiology of sight, as well as psychology of perception.
Intentional distortion of perspective in paintings, evoke special effects, better known in the works of Morris Asher.
Several optic illusions are studied within Gestalt-psychology. Perception of size in illusion.
Illusion of movement
Illusion of color perception. One ring seems darker than other, but in fact both are the same. Spoonerism –“duck-hare”
Physiological illusions
Illusion of grating
Morris Asher. Waterfall (1961), Example of impossible object
Perception of size
If not to measure visual estimations with a ruler, it happens that one can make mistake of 25% and more
Visual estimations of geometric real values, very much depend upon nature of the background and the image. This is relevant to lengths, squares, radii of curve. We can also show that the above said is true to angles, shapes and etc.
Illusion of color perception
100 years before already was known that, when in an image appears in retina comprising of bright and dark areas, light from brightly lighted areas seem to spill over on dark areas. This phenomenon is called irradiation.
Illusion of movement
Quiescent image seems moving.
The most well known impossible figures and objects are in the works of Morris Asher. While studying such pictures, every separate feature is very much probable, yet when attempting to look for line, it happens that this line, for instance, is not an external wall but an internal one. Other well known works belong to Penrose, Ruthersword and models of Eims.
Spoonerism is a type of optic illusion, where feature of a perceived object is depends upon the direction of the sight. One among those illusions is “duck hare”: image can be described as image of duck, as well as hare.
Perception of depth
Illusion of depth perception is inadequate reflection of perceived subject and properties. Nowadays the most
explored are illusory effects which can be observed at visual perception of two-dimensional contour images. Brain unconsciously sees pictures of single-convex (-concave). Perception depends upon the external direction (real or implied) of lighting.
Stereo illusions
Stereo pairs overlapped on periodic structure (Bela Jullecz, Hungary) permit us to observe stereo images same as like in any other usual stereo pair. Periodic image eases “separation” eyes (as a rule infinitely), which after eye focus to the distance of several 10 centimeters allows to see stereo image. This method permits partially combine stereo images by removing restriction on their size, but overlap some restrictions on the content of pictures and practically read by computers.
Illusion of the moon
Visual illusion is characterized by perceptible size of planetary body (The moon, Sun) is more (1, 5 times) than while located low above the horizon than estimated size in the top location of the sky.
Besides given visual psychological illusion, often observed is physical illusion-“flattening” of the moon (the Sun). Atmosphere changes visible sizes but only in vertical direction when the sun and Moon are located nearby each other (at great heights the effect is negligible). Refraction at the level of low edges of their discs (at the horizon) almost by 6 angular minutes of arc is more than the refraction at the level of top edges. At angular diameter of moon’s or Sun’s discs in 30 minutes-6 minutes is the difference difference- this is too much .Because horizontal sizes do not change, so the moon and sun seem flattened at the horizon.
Eimes room
Room invented by Adelberg Eimes, Jr in 1948 is a model of three dimensional optical illusions. Room is designed in such way that when looking from the front it is normal with perpendicular walls and ceiling. But in fact, shape of the room is a trapezium where distant room is located under sharp angle of one wall, respectively, at obtuse angle of other wall. Right angle is, hence, considerably closer to the onlooker than the left angle.
On account of reinforced by respective distorted chess squares on floor and ceiling, a person standing at the closer corner seem gargantuan when compared to the one at distant corner. When a person crosses corners, observer feels that he is either sharply enlarges, or, on contrary, shrinks.
I always wanted to take one of my original canvases, convert it to digital and then rework it with digital elements. This contest forced me to get off my butt and do it. LOL It's probably been 30 years since I did any "trick of the eye" pieces and it was fun to return to that style.
