| There is a generations old saying that says that necessity is the mother of invention. In some instances this adage proves to be very true. Take the case of Universti Sains Malaysia technician Mohd Zamri Othman. He was spurred if not inspired to create furniture from cardboard and from tissue paper for his ailing mother when she came to visit him at his unfurnished apartment. His mother, Che Nan Md Isa, is suffering from aching kneeds. When she visited Othman's apartment sometime in 2002, she had to sit on the floor, which saddened Othman. His first creation for his ailing mother was a chairman made out of cardboard that cost him next to nothing to make. Since that time he has created other home furnishings, using card board and tissue paper, including a sofa, a cupboard, curtain railings as well as a container for spices. In the end, his creative use of cardboard was presented to the Southeast Asian Institutions of Higher Learning Conference. Despite the fact that his mother is now deceased, Othman has continued to create furniture from cardboard -- without ever using a single nail. He explained that each of his creations are glued together -- mostly cardboard with about five percent being tissue paper. He does paint his furnishings to make them more attractive. Othman now plans to market his furniture creations in the not too distant future. |
