Maybe they went in the painting first and sailed a bit ahead and then the kids got scared and decided to go look for them.

Cool idea. I would double the width of the ladder and let the two kids walk side by side into the picture. The girl seems to be one step ahead, so you may try to look her like she is just moving into the picture (she is not fully inside it, only parts of her)... use different colors (inside = grayscale, outside = normal color). You know what I mean.... - Shadows on the painting could help to bring your good idea more out.
