| The biggest nominee and contender among this year academy awards was undoubtedly movie The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King has become one of the biggest Oscar winners of all time. In fact, the movie shares the number one slot with Ben Hur and Titanic. At the 76th Academy Awards, Lord of the Rings won 11 Oscars, winning in every single category in which it was nominated. Lord of the Rings won in such categories as directing, adapted screenplay, score and original song. In addition, Lord of the Rings also took home Oscars for art direction, costume design, visual effects, makeup, sound mixing and film editing. Other films did make a splash at the Academy Awards, including Mystic River in which its male lead, Sean Penn won the Best Actor Oscar. Meanwhile, Charlize Theron won the Best Actress Oscar for her performance as the real life serial killer in "Monster." Tim Robbins won the Supporting Actor Oscar for "Mystic River" and Renée Zellweger won the Supporting Actress Oscar for a drama set during the Civil War, "Cold Mountain."
