| The last car to be produced by America's oldest car company will be the Oldsmobile Alero. The car is due to roll off an assembly line in Lansing, Michigan, on Thursday. The end of the Oldsmobile brand comes after years of steadily declining sales. It marks the end of an era in car making in the United States. Oldsmobile has always claimed that it was the first company to mass produce cars, not Ford which normally does get such credit. Oldsmobile did pioneer the use of chrome and the automatic transmission in American cars. The last Alero to come of the line actually will be sent to the R.E. Olds Transportation Museum, a center which is named for Ransom Eli Olds who was a co-founder of the Olds Motor Vehicle Company. The company opened its doors in August 1897. The last 500 Aleros come complete with metallic cherry red paint and special Final 500 markings on the autos. There are also special editions of the Oldsmobile Bravada and Silhouette being offered at what Oldsmobile dealerships that remain in business. |
