Service men and women in the United States Army stationed in Iraq complained about a newly introduced armored body suit. In their complaint, these servcie people contend that it makes them look "goofy." In fact, the alien-like suits that have been issued to members of the Army are water cooled. Generally, they are worn by the turret gunners in Humvee vehicles. The protective uniform is similar to the armored suits worn by bomb squad officers in the civilian world and is intended to significantly reduce casualties amongst the military. Service people continue to complain that the armor and headgear is awkward to wear and uncomfortable. A significant number of soldiers additionally complain that the water-cooling system which was designed for the high temperatures of the Iraqi summer breaks down a lot and is inefficient. Despite these persistent gripes, the suits tested in combat by US military police units in northern Iraq proved their good protective qualities overall. The military newspaper -- Stars and Stripes -- has reported that these armored uniforms saved lives of at least three soldiers in roadside bombs accidents thus far. The paper reported that one soldier's visor stopped a piece of shrapnel that hit dead center. Had the soldier not been wearing the suit, the results would have been horrific. Critics do concede the protective value of the suits. But, the continue to argue that these heavy suits actually restrict movement in combat situations. The also argue that the new suits make soldiers look like astronauts. |
