Actions:
During the first week of Presidency Obama stopped the work of the military commissions in Guantanamo and ordered to close-down the prison within a year and changed the rules of interrogation of suspected terrorists, ordered the Department of Energy to raise the standards of efficiency of fuel and to establish good emission standards. Obama also canceled an interdiction of federal funding to international organizations connected with abortions.
On January 29, 2009, President Barack Obama passed the rule, increasing the possibility to appeal in court regarding discrimination facts against Labor payments (Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act of 2009). In February, Obama passed the bill about the stimulation of the Economy (American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009).
Human Rights:
In July, 2009, the convention on rights of invalid persons was signed in the USA. In October of the same year, the law expanding sphere of protection against crimes due to hatred on sexual minorities and invalids (Matthew Shepard Act) is passed.
Education:
In March, 2010, the law increasing the maximum issue of federal grants to needy students (Student Aid and Fiscal Responsibility Act) is passed.
Foreign policies, wars:
In April 2009, sanctions against Cuba were reduced.
In December 2009, a decision has been initiated to increase the American troop contingent in Afghanistan by 30000 troops.
In April, 2010, an agreement to reduce the strategic offensive weapons was signed with Russia.
Health Care Reforms:
In March, 2010, despite resistance from a section of the Democrats in the House of Representatives and Republicans the bill has been passed on the reform of health care for providing medical insurance to a large section of the population (Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act, the amendments are brought in the form of Health Care and Education Reconciliation Act of 2010).
Judicial system:
In 2009, Obama appointed Sonia Sotomayor as Justice of the Supreme Court of the USA as replacement to Souter, who was appointed as Justice by Bush Sr. The Senate approved the nomination. In April, 2010, JP Stevens, Associate Justice of the US Supreme Court announced his early retirement plans and Barack Obama nominated Elena Kagan as Associate Justice as the replacement for Stevens in May.
