This contest is fueled by the following news:
December 14th marks the birthday of Michel de Nostredame, better known by his Latinized name which is Nostradamus. He lived from December 14, 1503 through July 2, 1566. Nostradamus is best known for his book entitled "Les Propheties," which first appeared in spring in 1555. The book rarely has been out of print since his death. It has been very popular all over the world. Nostradamus has attracted what many people describe as a cult following. Many people credit the man for predicting many major world events. Nostradamus himself claimed that he based his predictions on judicial astrology. Judicial astrology is defined as the astrological assessment of the so-called quality of future developments. He actually was significantly criticized by professional astrologers of his time. There has been a good deal of research into his work in recent times. This research suggests that much of the work of Nostradamus actually paraphrases other end of the world prophecies. A significant amount of his work seems to be end of the world accounts paraphrased from the Bible. He seems to supplement Biblical prophecies with references to historical events and various anthologies of omen reports. He then projects these well into the future using a process called comparative horoscopy. This led to many predictions involving ancient figures such as Nero, Marius and Sulla. It also led to his description of such things as "battles in the clouds" and "frogs falling from the sky." Many royals and noblemen sought out Nostradamus seeking horoscopes from him as well as advice. He generally expected his clients to provide him with birth charts on which he would base horoscopes. This ran counter to the practice of the day. He was also fearful of religious fanatics and came up with a method of obscuring his meaning by using what he called "Virgilianized syntax." This included word games and a blending of language including Provencal, Latin, Greek and Italian. The Queen Consort of King Henri II of France, Catherine de Medicis, was one of Nostradamus' greatest fans. When the Queen read his almanacs for 1555, which suggested unnamed threats to the French royal family, she summoned him to come to Paris where he created horoscopes for her children. When summoned to Paris, Nostradamus actually thought he would be beheaded. In fact, he lived until 1566 and the Queen designated him as Counselor and Physician in Ordinary to the King.
