In China, the New Year is traditionally celebrated during the winter new moon. In the Gregorian calendar, this coincides with one of the days between the 21st of January and the 21st of February. Each New Year is related to one of the 12 animals and one of the five elements. The first day of the New Year starts with fire works and the ignition of perfumes. The fire works should frighten evil souls and bring appeasement and happiness to the families. At the end of the day, the family welcomes the deity to the home after their visit to the world of souls where they “gave a report” about the passed year, and that contributes respect to the ancestors.

* In Italy, old things are thrown out on New Year, and Christmas is celebrated by igniting the Christmas logs.
