MySpace.com, the Internet venue that attracts hundreds of thousands of teens each day, was ranked the number one website in the United States last week, knocking Yahoo's gateway site and Google's search engine from that vaulted position. The ranking information was provided by the Internet tracking firm Hitwise. MySpace is owned by Rupert Murdoch's News Corporation (the parent company of Fox Broadcasting and other media enterprises). MySpace accounted for 4.46 of all Internet visits in the United States for the week that ended on July 8th. As a result, MySpace advanced beyond Yahoo, Google and Microsoft's MSN Hotmail. In its tracking efforts, Hitwise does not provide figures for unique hits or visits to a website venue. MySpace is the dominate force in social networking on the Internet in today's world. MySpace captured nearly 80 percent of overall visits to online social networking venues, which was up from 76 percent in April. FaceBook was a distant second at 7.6 percent. Murdoch's company bought MySpace one year ago for $580 million in order to build up the Internet presence of News Corporation.
