| As the Western growing season draws to a close, shoppers can be found scrounging through store shelves brimming with wonderful tomatoes and strawberries, hoping to enjoy one final round of fresh fruit. With that said, strawberries are a painful subject for Guillermo Ruiz. The hard toiling farm worker believes his headaches, confusion and vision problems stem from a decade of working in the fields with methyl bromide, a pesticide that is used in strawberry farming. Cheri Aldeman, a teacher who works in a classroom that borders a berry barm, worries that her students might have inhaled a dangerous whiff of methyl bromide when it drifted from the adjacent field. She noted that a little bit of poison is poison nonetheless. |
