| | An Australian surfer has taken home (Down Under) the Miss Universe Crown and the $250,000 and crown with 800 diamonds that goes with the title. The winner is a model and dancer from Sydney. She is also a cheerleader for the Newcastle Knights rugby team in her home country. She says that she enjoys wakeboarding and surfing. She received the crown from outgoing Miss Universe, Amelia Vega who hails from the Dominican Republic. Miss U.S.A. was voted the first runner up at the pageant by the panel of judges. The judges included Emilio Estefan and Bo Derek. Approximately 1.5 billion people in 150 nations watched the programs Over 7,000 people watched the show live, paying $250 a seat to see the show at an auditorium in Quito.
