| | In the most sweeping changes to its network of military bases to be undertaken in modern history, the Pentagon is proposing a plan that will close 33 major facilities. The facilities are located in 22 different states. The Pentagon also is intending to reconfigure hundreds of other bases -- all of the moves being designed to achieve savings in the huge defense budget. The plan has been in the works for over two years and was announced by Donald Rumsfeld, the secretary of defense. In creating the plan, the secretary said that a number of factors were taken into consideration, including the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq and the overall security needs of the nation. Rumsfeld maintains that his tactic is to make the military more combat ready by making the individual military services leaner and more unified.
