The extended bonnet, characteristic “gills”, moved-back cabin, short rear portion and top-opening wing-doors almost make the viewer passion for high speeds. Even a glance at the design of the car it becomes obvious that its designers are inspired by the effective forms of “Uhlenhaut’s coupe” and the modern “silver arrows” of the “Formula-1”. The design of “Uhlenhaut’s coupe” was taken from the 1950s from last century. It had the design and technicalities of the road version of the Coupe 300 SL with characteristic wing-doors (1954) and characteristics of racing cars, which were merged into the sports coupe 300 SLR.
Sports cars were developed under the guidance of Rudolf Uhlenhaut and to date, it is accepted to name the cars after him. It is sufficient to mention “Uhlenhaut’s Coupe” and at once it becomes clear to experts that the discussion is about the Coupe 300 SLR.
The abbreviation SLR operates magically on motor racing fans. It became a symbol of automobile splendor and perfection. Most importantly, these principles formed the basis for the design of the legendary racing cars from Mercedes-Benz, which took part in races in 1955, such as Mille Miglia, Targa Florio or Tourist Trophy and registered wins three times. The car, designated by the abbreviation SLR, traditionally occupies a special place amongst powerful sports cars. Giving due to this tradition, Mercedes Benz and McLaren implemented a variety of technical innovations from motor racing into the production cars.
As in the case of racing cars the “Formula -1” McLaren-Mercedes, the body of the new SLR is made from carbon fiber (CFK), ensuring a high energy absorption level at small weight and accordingly, the maximum protection of passengers. The SLR is the first production car in the world, whose front deformation zone is made entirely from carbon fiber.
The h-tech engine, possessing a capacity of 460 kWt/626 h.p and the nature of a true racer, was developed by Mercedes-AMG division. The 5.4-litre V8 engine with mechanical charging is assembled by a single individual AMG engineer and bears his signature. The SLR is equipped with one of the most powerful engines, which are being used today in road and sports cars which are produced on a large scale.
The gearbox is set automatically. However, by rotating one controller on the central console, it is possible to change the switching mode of gearbox, choosing between usual, sports or manual working algorithms and by using the second controller to change the changing speed of the gears in manual mode.
The progressive technologies from racing sports in Mercedes Benz McLaren will be seen on the streets. Together with it, the new SLR McLaren adds a new impulse to the traditions of the sports cars of Gran Turismo and in addition with excellent dynamic properties also demonstrates high comfort.
