This contest is fueled by the following news: This Memorial Day, on Monday May 28 there will be a traditional ceremony at Arlington Cemetery in Washington where President George W. Bush will lay wreaths on the tomb of the unknown soldiers. Others expected to take part in this Memorial Day ceremony are the minister of Defence and several military generals and high officials. Memorial Day is traditionally celebrated on the last Monday of May, and honors all American soldiers killed at battlefields. This is the day when people lay wreaths on the tombs of soldiers and on the military memorials, as well as honoring the veterans of the past wars. Across all country flags will be lowered to half mast till afternoon on the Memorial Day. At 3 pm there will be a minute of silence in the United States. The first celebration of Memorial Day was observed on May 30 1868 in honor of the fallen soldiers of Civil War between the North and the South. That day the tombs of about twenty thousand soldiers were graced at Arlington Cemetery. By the end of the 19th century Memorial Day was celebrated all across the country. After the World War II, the last Monday of May became the day to honor all fallen soldiers in any military conflicts where the USA participated. In 1971 the Memorial Day was announced a national day off.
