This contest is fueled by the following news: Memorial Day is a federal holiday of the USA, which is celebrated annually on the last Monday of May. Memorial Day is dedicated in the memory of the American military personnel, who died in all wars and armed conflicts in which the USA ever took part. The holiday was initiated after the Civil war in the USA and was originally dedicated in the memory of the soldiers who died during the Civil War. After World War I, the citizens of the USA started remembering the services of soldiers who died even in other armed conflicts on this day. Since 1971, Memorial Day has been declared a national holiday in the USA. On this day, Americans pay a visit to cemeteries and military memorials; the flag of the USA shall fly half-mast till afternoon local time. Many Americans consider Memorial Day as the onset of summer. Traditionally, it is associated with family activities, picnics and sports events. A similar American holiday is Veteran's Day, which is celebrated on the 11th of November. Veteran's Day is dedicated in the memory of all veterans of wars, who are either alive or dead.
