| On what ultimately proved to be the last day of John Lennon's wife, he posed for photographs with his wife Yoko Ono in a shooting session with Annie Liebovitz. The photos included a short of a naked Lenon curled up around a clothed Ono which would become the cover of a tribute to Lennon in Rolling Stone. That magazine cover has been ranked as the top magazine cover of the past forty years by a panel of editors, artists and designers. Other covers on the list include images from September 11th, the Vietnam War and of the first black woman on the cover of a national women's magazine, Glamour in 1968. The American Society of Magazine Editors announced the rankings at the American Magazine Conference in Puerto Rico. The competition was held to mark the 40th anniversary of the group's awards. The awards emphasize the importance of magazine covers. |
