Under heavy fire for publishing a story that led to deadly protests in Afghanistan, Newsweek magazine editor Mark Whitaker put forth an editor's note criticizing the manner in which the magazine handled a story contending U.S. interrogators were desecrating the Quran at Guantanamo Bay. Bush administration officials shrugged off the statement. The violence in Afghanistan, that occurred in the aftermath of the initial story, left 15 people dead.
