 Contest Directions:
New York, California and Connecticut are introducing legislation that will ban the sales of traditional light bulbs, in favor of more energy efficient ones. They say the switch to compact fluorescent bulbs will cut average household's electricity bill by $400 per year. John Edwards has no plans of switching. He would rather get one less haircut instead.
In this contest you are asked to photoshop traditional light bulbs in place of anything else. Examples can be placing them instead of heads and other body parts of people, animals or even insects as in this dragonfly entry. Alternatively include light bulbs in products, paintings, replace planets, etc. For those who photoshop them in place of heads, feel free to keep hats on.

| | This contest is fueled by the following news: |
| | The home owners may not see their favorite old fashioned light bulbs
in stores much longer. California, Rhode Island, Connecticut and New
York joined forces to introduce legislation banning the sales of
traditional light bulbs, in favor of the gas bulbs, which consume less
energy, emit more light, and last much longer. The total savings per
average household should be about four hundred dollars a year, after a
switch to gas lamps. Other states are considering joining the ban
which should eliminate the sales of incandescent bulbs by the year
2012. Many states are taking intermediary measure for now - they
introduce higher taxes on sales of traditional light bulbs. While
halogen lamps are not exactly green energy, they are a step towards
it, as they are more energy efficient and last longer. Former vice President Al Gore, who is active environmentalist these days, said this is a move towards a positive direction to get America out of excessive consumption.
Light Bulb Design:
An incandescent bulb consists of a stem, contact wires, tungsten
filament, safeguard, glass bulb and contact wires of illumination from
the surrounding.
Special bulbs
" Projector lamps - for dia and cine projectors. They have high
temperature wire (and accordingly increased brightness and decreased
durability); generally the wire is placed so that luminous part forms
a rectangle.
" Double filament lamps for automobile head lamps. One filament
for far lightening and other filament for near lightening. Besides
such lamps have screen, which in the near mode strike off rays, which
may make opposite drivers blind.
History of Invention:
" In 1854 year Heinrich Gobel developed first "Modern" lamp:
carbonized bamboo wire in a vacuum bulb. The following 5 years he
developed what is called by many people as the first practical lamp.
" 11th July 1874 year a Russian engineer Alexander Nikolayevich
Lodygin got patent for the wired lamp under the number 1619. As
glowing wire he used a carbon rod, placed in a vacuum bulb.
" English Scientist Joseph Wilson Swan got Britain's patent in
the year 1878 for the lamp with carbon filament. In his bulb filament
situated in a tenuous oxygen atmosphere, which allowed to get very
bright light.
" During the second half of the 1870s an American scientist
Thomas Edison conducted an experiment in which he tried different
metals as filaments. At last he returns to the carbon filament and
develops a lamp with a life span of 40 hours. However such short life
span lamps forced users up to the gas lighting.
" In 1890s Lodygin developed some lamps with metallic filaments.
" In 1906 year Lodygin sold his patent on tungsten filament lamp
to General Electric. Due to the high cost of the tungsten patent it is
found to be of limited use.
" In 1910 year William David Coolidge invented a better method
of tungsten wire manufacture. Subsequently all other types of
filaments were pushed out by the tungsten filament.
" The persisting problem regarding the quick evaporation of the
filament in the vacuum was solved by an American scientist Irwing
Lengmur, who, working in the General Electric Company from 1909 year,
thought of filling the bulb with inert gas, which significantly
increased the life span of the bulb.
Interesting Facts:
In the USA in one of the fire departments of the Livermore city
(California State) there exists a 4 watt lamp made manually, popularly
known as "Hundred Year Bulb". It has been glowing continuously for
more than 100 years, from the year 1901.
People used to sleep for 10 hours a day until the bulb of Thomas Alva
Edison got popular. |
