Leslie Nielsen
Contest Directions: Canadian-American actor Leslie Nielsen, best known for Airplane! and the Naked Gun franchise, died Sunday of complications from pneumonia. He was 84. Throughout his career, Nielsen appeared in over 100 films and 1,500 television programs playing over 220 characters. Nielsen's most famous lines are from Airplane!, when he asks the pilot if he can fly the plane. Says the pilot, "Surely, you can't be serious." Nielsen responds, "I am serious, and don't call me Shirley."
From Dr. Rumack to Lt. Frank Drebin to Col. Buzz Brighton, to Mr. Magoo, Nielsen made audiences laugh by portraying serious characters who were seemingly oblivious to their surroundings. In remembrance of Leslie, we post some little-known facts about him:
* Nielsen's father was a Mountie. Consequently, Nielsen spent his early childhood in the isolated Yukon Territories.
* Before he was famous, Nielsen served as an aerial gunner for the Royal Canadian Air Force near the end of the Second World War. After he completed his service, he worked as a DJ at a Calgary radio station.
* Nielsen's brother Eric was the Deputy Prime Minister of Canada.
* Leslie was considered for the Jack Nicholson part in The Shining.
For all the laughs you have given, thank you Leslie. You will be missed. Surely.
To pay a tribute to great actor Leslie Nielsen, photoshop him any way you wish. Some examples are: show what Nielsen will do in heaven (or hell), what movies he could have played in, what alternative careers he could have chosen, immortalize him in paintings, etc. These are just some ideas.

This contest is fueled by the following news: Leslie William Nielsen (February 11, 1926, Regina, Saskatchewan, Canada - November 28, 2010, Fort Lauderdale, Florida, USA) was a Canadian and American actor, best known for his comedy roles in films between 1980 - 2000. He died on November 28, 2010 Biography: Leslie William Nielsen was born on February 11, 1926 in the Canadian city of Regina. His mother, Mabel Elizabeth (nee Davies), was an immigrant from London to Canada, where she met Leslie's future father - Danish Ingvard Eversen Nielsen, who was a constable in the Royal Canadian Mounted Police. Leslie William Nielsen was the youngest member in the family. His elder brother - Erik Nielsen (1924-2008) - was the Deputy Prime Minister of Canada in 1980s. His uncle - Jean Hersholt - actor of silent cinema, best known for his role of Dr. Christian in the radio series by the same name. His family soon moved to Edmonton, where the boys attended school. During World War II, Leslie Nielsen was recruited into the Royal Canadian Air Force, where he underwent necessary training but was not deported to places of military operations due to his young age. On completion of service, Nielsen worked as a disc jockey at a local Canadian radio station. Leslie Nielsen said that he owes his acting talent to his strict father, whom he often lied to in order to avoid punishment. In 1949, after training at the New York Theater, Nielsen decided to devote himself to acting. He moved to New York, where he received his first television role in "Battleship Bismarck". For several years, Leslie Nielsen played in various television dramas including "Tales from Tomorrow" (1951). In the mid 1950s, Leslie Nielsen moved to Hollywood, where he starred in a movie for the first time. "Forbidden Planet" (1956) - Nielsen's film debut. During the period 1960 - 1970s, the actor was offered mostly minor roles. During this period, Leslie Nielsen starred in 50 films including the relatively popular "Harlow" (1965), "The Plainsman" (1966) and the "The Poseidon Adventure" (1972) but he did not earn a great reputation. In the early 1980s, Leslie Nielsen decided to radically change his roles. The serious hero was replaced with a comedian. The turning point in his career was the successful comedy film "Airplane!" (1980). Nielsen gradually became more and more famous. In 1982, Leslie Nielsen starred in several series of "Police Squad", playing detective Lt. Frank Drebin. The character was developed in the comedy film the "Naked Gun" (1988), and directed by the famous trio David Zucker, Jim Abrahams and Jerry Zucker. The film became a hit. Two more successful sequels followed - "The Naked Gun 2 - The Smell of Fear" (1991) and "Naked Gun 33 ⅓ - The Final Insult" (1994). Leslie Nielsen said that working with the Zuckers and Jim Abrahams was a big success for him. Other films followed. In the following decade, Nielsen's career had seen serious failures ("Mr. Magoo" (1997), "The Sixth Element" (2000), "Dracula, Dead and Loving It" by Mel Brooks) and unconditional success with ("Spy Hard" (1996), "Wrongfully Accused" (1998) and "Scary Movie 3" (2003). At the same time, Leslie Nielsen also worked on television, acting in various television shows and serials with great success. Various genres of films are found in Nielsen's filmography including the catastrophe film "The Poseidon Adventure" (1972), however, roles in the comedy genre brought him the most success. The successful career of Nielsen - comedy actor - started after the release of "Airplane" in 1980. Nielsen earned worldwide fame for the "The Naked Gun" trilogy (1988, 1991 & 1994). In 2003 & 2004, Leslie Nielsen played the role of U.S. President in the third & fourth films of "Scary Movie". No less successful was the career of Nielsen on television. The actor was twice nominated for Emmy Award - in 1982, for his role in a comedy series "Police Squad" & in 1988 for his role in TV series "Day by Day", where he starred as special guest. Leslie Nielsen died on November 28, 2010 in his sleep in a hospital near his home in Fort Lauderdale (Florida) due to pneumonia. His family and friends were by his side at his time of death. As told to Canadian radio station by a nephew of Nielsen, the actor died on Sunday, November 28, surrounded by friends and family members. Cause of death of the comedian was not confirmed. Nielsen's family has not yet announced the time and place of the burial. Nielsen is survived by two children from his second marriage. He was married four times.
