| Traditionally, lemurs were thought to be cute, but stupid. (The picture of lemurs following each other over the side of a cliff comes to mind.) However, U.S. researchers believe that lemurs may be smarter than anyone imagined. The animals are showing amazing intelligence when they are provided with treats when playing a computer game. The research is being undertaken at Duke University and may reveal how humans become more sophisticated over time mathematically. The research has show so far that more primitive animals (like lemurs) need a good reason -- in this case, a taste treat -- to bother trying to count. By contrast, monkeys and humans will stretch their own minds simply out of innate curiosity. |
